One of the television series that has surprised me the most in recent years has been Atlanta (FX), which can be seen on Disney+ in Spain. It is a difficult series to classify. Surrealism, false documentary, comedy, drama, social denunciation... It has it all.
Donald Glover (aka Childish Gambino, aka mcDJ) is the lead actor, writer, producer, and director of some episodes. And he is accompanied by his brother Stephen Glover in the scripts and Hiro Murai in the direction. Hiro Murai has been the director of music videos for Donald Glover (This is America, Sober, Telegraph Av, 3005...) and has worked on TV series like The Bear or Station Eleven, two of my favorite series in recent months.
But back to Atlanta. And specifically about the beginning of its episodes. Normally the series have a characteristic header, with music that identifies them. That was something common on television from previous decades when there were no platforms, and it would announce that the episode was starting and from other parts of the house you would listen to it and immediately go to the room where the television was.
Now that's not necessary, and you can allow yourself some creative liberties. These are details that perhaps for many people are unimportant or they believe do not contribute anything to the product. But I think the opposite.
On this website, they have compiled the beginning of the Atlanta episodes and we can see the level of detail, sometimes almost invisible, where they play with the viewer.
It's like finding the arrow in the FedEx logo. And I think it's great.
